Aronian steamrolling through Tata Steel Chess 2012
From the sorry-magnus-and-giri dept. (82)

Aronian won yet again in Tata Steel Chess 2012 against Giri (Aronian's commentary video). I, and a lot of folks, thought that Magnus would be setting the record straight this year as well, but no. Giri tasted the raw power of Aronian's play -- Giri even tried to play Aronian's own game against him! Really strong game. Replay the game. Do not forget to check Giri's own commentary about the 3rd lost in a row.
Chess section is back
From the a-bit-more-dynamic dept. (102)
After a very looooong pause I decided to put the Chess section back into the site, but this time it won't be about "teaching" chess for novices. This will be more of a chess blog. I posted 1 game for now that I played against the computer under Linux. It will be expanded later. Chess at Kiskeyix
By the way, I'm using JChess by Ben Marini -- a Jquery plugin for displaying pgn chess games. Using jquery and Ruby is delightful :).
No to internet censorship: PIPA & SOPA
From the sopa-pipa-and-other-freedom-supressing-laws dept. (93)
Already contacted both of my senators and house representative on the subject of internet privacy laws PIPA and SOPA.
- Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/
- Lookup your congressman/senator representatives via zipcode
- go to contact form/twitter/phone
This is the message I typed:
The legislation for PIPA and SOPA must be changed before they are passed as laws. As currently written, they impaired the freedom of the internet. This will throw us back 40 or 50 years of knowledge sharing and advancements in technology.
My FICS is back
From the free-chess-online dept. (141)
FICS is back! After many many many years without playing chess through FICS, I was able to recover my account!! This I opened in 1998 during my college years, and when I knew practically nothing of chess. If you are a chess player who happens to also play online, you can challenge me for a match by using my handle lems.
Here is a sample .desktop file for Linux if you happen to download Jin and untar it to /opt/jin

Btrfs burned baby burned!
From the better-filesystem-my-ass-back-to-xfs dept. (233)
Well, it only took about 6 months but Btrfs burned me badly. [It turns out] (http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.file-systems.btrfs/5599/focus=5623)(Btrfs wiki) that simple copying/rename operations can leave you with zero-length file sizes if your system crash (or you loose power or your disk is buggy).
Even doing btrfsck left my filesystem in bad shape. And now I have no idea which files are corrupted or when did I loose them... what a bad situation. Luckily I have enough backups to figure it out.
Back to XFS, the best file system and only champion.
Competition Chess Rating: ~1373.25
From the first-chess-competition-ever dept. (181)
I've joined the BAL chess league, which plays for fun. After 7 rounds I played 4 games. Now I'm ready to be officially rated! My score is 2 out of 4 won against really strong (competition level) players. The provisional rating system used is explained in the official site.
Here is where I stand:
((0 x 1300) + (1886 + 1539 + 1034 + 1034 )+(400 x (2 - 2))/(0+4) - 0
This is pretty much the average of the ratings of the 4 players:
5493/4 = 1373.25
1373.25! a lot of games to go so this can change. I'm getting a hang of competing. Here is a sample game from round 5 where I lost to Adia Onyange playing white:

World Food Day: Oct 16
From the awareness-of-food-crisis dept. (559)
Here is an idea, instead of gambling by buying a lottery ticket this weekend, how about donating that same amount to FAO for World Food Day? It should make you happier to think that somebody some where is going to eat because of your kindness. (yeah, if you are the 1 in 13,983,816 millions, who actually hit the lottery, you might actually be able to help more. But this is a really, really unlikely scenario. If you simply donate $1 now, you will contribute to stopping somebody's hunger right the way!)
To win you must have one of the following matches against the number actually drawn:
Match 6 (Jackpot Win!) Odds = 1:13,983,816
Match 5 Odds = 1:54,201
Match 4 Odds = 1:1,032
Match 3 Odds = 1:57
For an intersting chart visit the NJ Lottery page itself. For the powerball the odds are 1:195,249,054.00 chance of winning!!
Time saving tip of the day: Twitter favorites
From the saving-an-article-for-later dept. (415)
Say that you found this awesome article online and you want to read it, but you don't have the time... There are apps that allow you to save this and read it offline later -- they even synchronize between devices. However, if you do not feel like paying $1 or $5 for this simple minded apps, then you can use Twitter favorites to your advantage!
- copy the link and post it on your twitter feed (which you will do anyway, but then it will be buried in your timeline)
- click on the "favorite" icon (star) on your Twitter feed
- on your mobile device, go to your favorites whenever you have the time to read the said articles
This serves a double-sword purpose (or triple!): it increases your quality tweets (hopefully, at least volume will increase), it allows you to follow back on important stuff, and lastly, it gives something about you to your followers (people do see your favorites after all).
